It's My Party and You'll Cry If I Want You To
Celebrating the births of such renowned artists as Hayao Miyazaki, David Bowie, Elvis Presley, and me.
Hey, look at that, it’s January 7th already. Great job procrastinating, me!
I’ve got about 40 minutes to get this email out before I have to clock back in at my day job, so I’m going to get straight to it.
1/ 8 - WTF Wednesday: Bubba Ho-Tep
Tomorrow, January 8th, is my birthday. It also happens to be the birthdays of David Bowie and Elvis Presley, and that makes for some excellent programming opportunities.
For this month’s WTF Wednesday screening, we’ve got the greatest Elvis movie ever made (Baz Luhrmann eat your heart out). Featuring one of my all time favorite actors, Bruce Campbell.
Check out what Bel from Kingston Film Foundation had to say about this one in the most recent Hudson Valley Crucial Viewing Newsletter.
In addition to the screening, I’m also going to be hosting a raffle in support of Out Youth, an Austin, TX organization that supports LGBTQIA+ youth and their allies in the Central Texas area.
Prizes include:
An autographed copy of Bruce Campbell’s second autobiography, Hail to the Chin
The big WTF Wednesday Presents: Bubba Ho-Tep poster currently in the Rosendale Theatre display case
Two free tickets for next month’s WTF Wednesday screening of Wild At Heart
Raffle tickets will be $5, cash or Venmo.
More about the movie below.

Elvis and JFK did not die, and today they’re roommates in an East Texas nursing home whose residents are being killed by an ancient Egyptian Soul Sucker named Bubba Ho-Tep. I want to get that on the table at the get-go, so I can deal with the delightful wackiness of this movie, which is endearing and vulgar in about the right proportion.
Based on prolific genre writer Joe R. Lansdale’s novella, and written and directed by Don Coscarelli (PHANTASM, THE BEASTMASTER). Elvis Presley (Bruce Campbell, THE EVIL DEAD TRILOGY) and JFK (Ossie Davis, DO THE RIGHT THING) team up to save their nursing home from a mummy. What else is there to say?
Come early for the preshow, featuring clips celebrating Elvis, Bruce Campbell, and birthdays (7pm)!

1/8 & 1/10 - Remembering David Bowie: Labyrinth
We’re hosting screenings of Labyrinth to commemorate both the birth (1/8) and death (1/10) of David Bowie. I intend on being at the 1/10 show, and based on presales, it looks like it’s going to be a good sized crowd.

In honor of David Bowie and on the occasion of what would have been his 78th birthday, we proudly present: LABYRINTH!
Starring: David Bowie & Jennifer Connelly
Directed by: Jim Henson
Frustrated with babysitting on yet another weekend night, Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), a teenager with an active imagination, summons the Goblins to take her baby stepbrother away. When little Toby actually disappears, Sarah must follow him into a fantastical world to rescue him from the Goblin King (David Bowie). Guarding his castle is the labyrinth itself, a twisted maze of deception, populated with outrageous characters and unknown dangers. To get through it in time to save Toby, Sarah befriends the Goblins, in hopes that their loyalty isn’t just another illusion in a place where nothing is as it seems.

Adventures in Animation: Studio Ghibli Selects
Finally, this month we launched a new family friendly series focusing on animation. To get us started with a bang we’re celebrating one of the greatest animators and filmmakers of all time, Hayao Miyazaki.
We kicked it off celebrating Hayao Miyazaki’s birthday this past weekend with an English screening of what’s considered to be the first Studio Ghibli film, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. We had a great turnout even though we only finished getting the bookings live days earlier
We still have five more screenings in the series, including one more screening of Nausicaä (this time in Japanese), and both English and Japanese screenings of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.
For those of you who are serious about Studio Ghibli, all three Japanese screenings will take place on Sunday, 1/19, and our friends from series sponsor, World’s End Comics, will be on-site with Studio Ghibli merch.
Due to the clunkiness of our ticketing system, all tickets will need to be purchased individually, but anyone who buys tickets for all three movies on the 19th will receive a free popcorn ($5 off).
